Biblical Counseling & Discipleship Class - John Barnett

  1. 1. What is the definition of Biblical Counseling? Romans 15:4-6, 13-14 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    • “teaching” (didasko) part of our great commission task to be “teaching” all true disciples of Christ (Mt. 28:20).
    • “patience” (hupomeno) this word means “stays in place, abides”; God is described as being faithful and unchangingly staying in place. This also describes the Word (I Pet. 1:23) and in I Cor. 13:13 ‘faith, hope, and love’. This is also the great word of Psalm 27:14; Isaiah 40:31.
    • “comfort” (paraklesis): means comfort that comes through God's Word that is based upon the faithful God we can and do trust. God is the God of patience and comfort, and He alone through His Word can comfort the downcast (II Cor. 7:6).

    13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.

    • “The God of hope” is the source of hope we offer as Disciple-making/Counselors (v. 13a);
    • His Holy Spirit energizes this hope by “the power of the Holy Spirit” (v. 13b);
    • All Counseling/Disciple-makers need to be “full” of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22);
    • Only by the Spirit are we “able” (v. 14a) this word (dunamai) means power or ability, it is passive, so that means ‘made able by another’, or ‘enabled’;
    • All believers have been left with the job description (I Th. 5:14) to be Biblical Counselors “admonish one another” (noutheteo). This word means ‘impart understanding’, ‘set right’, or ‘lay upon the heart’. Paul said this is what his ministry was 24/7 (Acts 20:31).

    2. What is the best preparation for Biblical Counselors & Disciple-makers (John 17:17)?

    • Knowing, obeying, applying, living, and then sharing the sanctifying Word of God.
    • That is the whole first semester of the Biblical Self-Confrontation course we are enrolled in.
    • This course is an exercise in each of us surrendering in personal co-operation, to daily sanctification by the Spirit, through His Word.

    3. Who can be a Wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9:6)?

    • Only those in step with the Wonderful Counselor Himself! Isaiah 9:6 the only Wonderful Counselor is Christ. He is the only One that knows us completely, understands our situation, and can stay with us through all the struggles to the end.
    • Always remember, we just serve and represent the Wonderful Counselor, who lives within us by way of His Spirit who is called the Comforter.
    • Biblical counseling is done with the Word of Christ, empowered and guided by the Spirit of Christ, to accomplish Christlikeness.
    • The goal of counseling is Christlikeness: not to help people feel better, remove their problems, fix up their life, and make them happy.

    4. Our Philosophy of this Counseling & Discipleship Ministry:

    • We are not becoming mental health providers or therapists; we are learning to invest our lives into others by discipling and counseling people in God's Word.

    • The mind, like the rest of our body, is deeply affected by diet, rest, and sickness. There are sicknesses, nutritional and rest deficiencies: both below the neck and above.

  5. Biblical Counselors are First Called to Be Personal, Daily Followers of ChristDiscipleship/Counseling 101
    Week 5
    What is Biblical Counseling?
    Biblical Counseling is Supernatural: God does the work through the Word.
    Biblical Counseling is not a technique: it is a chosen way of life, of walking in the light and truth.
    Biblical Counseling is Personal Sanctification: we must first learn to deal with the flesh in our own lives; so we confess imperfection.
    Biblical Counseling is Personal Discipleship: we are explaining how to be followers of Christ, like we are.
    G.R.O.W. statements “I am by God’s Grace...”: G: Getting into the Word each day.
    R: Reaching out for help to God in prayer.
    O: Opening my life to the sanctifying work of the Spirit.
    W: Willingly opening the Word to others.
    Then add any shared Prayer Requests.

    5 Lesson One Theme 19a:
    God Enables you to take the first steps towards lasting Biblical change. This step is your response to God’s
    demonstrated love for you in Christ Jesus.
    John 1:12 - Salvation makes us sons & daughters of God; John 3:16-21 - Saved people come to the light to be exposed by the Word;
    Romans 5:8 - Christ only died for sinners
    II Cor. 5:17 - The key to salvation’s fresh start is being in Christ;
    Ephesians 2:8-9 - By grace we are wired for good works;
    I John 4:10 - God loves us so much He sent the remedy for our sins.

    6 Principle-1 page 19b:
    God’s Plan for you to change in a Biblical way centers on His Son , Jesus Christ.
    •Because God’s standard is one of perfection (Lev. 19:2; Mt. 5:48), you cannot meet it by your own efforts (Psalm 143:2, Ecc. 7:20; Rom. 3:23).
    •You cannot save yourself (Prov. 20:9)...
    •You need to recognize (Isaiah 64:6)...
    •By God’s grace (John 3:16, 36)...

    7 Lesson Two Theme
    p. 31a
    • After you receive salvation by God’s grace through our Lord Jesus Christ, your growth in Christ and fitness to help others Biblically will be in proportion to your faithfulness in Biblically examining yourself and applying God’s truths to your life.

    8 Scriptures on Personal Sanctification
    Mat. 7:1-5 - disciples check for personal sins; Rom. 12:1-2 - disciples surrender daily;
    I Cor. 11:31 - disciples say no to personal sins;
    Gal. 6:1-5 - KEY LESSON: The Attitude of the Discipler; Hebrews 5:12-14 - disciples need personal exercise;
    I John 1:8-9 - disciples seek regular cleansing.

    9 p. 31b: Principle-2
    Establish Biblical Patterns
    You are to be ROOTED, built up, and established in the Lord Jesus Christ and are NOT to be conformed to the world (Rom. 12:1-2; Col. 2:6-10).
    You must PRACTICE God’s Word to grow into maturity
    (Mt. 7:24-27; II Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 5:12-14; Jam. 1:22-25; I Pet. 2:2; II Peter 1:4-11; I Jn. 2:5).

    10 S.L.A. Study on Romans 12:1-2: The Daily Surrender of a Disciple/Follower of Christ
    SUMMARY: The entire first 11 chapters of Romans are applied starting with these verses. There are two imperatives.
    I CAN DECIDE TO LET GO: v.1 “present” is in the aorist tense and means a final action, we go back to and remember.
    I MUST DIE DAILY: v. 1 “living sacrifice” this is a present active verb. This means I renew this once and for all decision, all day long, as I go through life. Tied to the altar daily.
    MY LIFE MATTERS TO GOD: v. 1 “holy and acceptable” explains what flavor God wants in our lives: “holy” and the goal of life is driven by loving Him so much we want to please Him “acceptable to God”.

    11 S.L.A. Study on Romans 12:1-2: The Daily Surrender of a Disciple/Follower of Christ
    MY FIRST CHOICE: v. 2 “do not be conformed” this is the first imperative application in this section of Romans that applies truth to the lives of believers. This word means: God doesn’t want our lives shaped by His enemy (the world).
    MY LIFELONG GREAT TASK: v. 2 “be transformed” this is the great word morphed. God explains that all transformation starts with a renewed mind (anakaino). The tense is present (constantly/ongoing) and passive (God does it to us) ana = back again; kaino = new; God resets our minds back to His Way by applying His Word to my life by His Spirit
    GOD CONFIRMS HIS POWER IN ME: v. 2 “prove” this word dokimadzo means ‘proof after testing’. We will find the proof of God at work in us as we test out the “reset” button for our minds. Allow Him to renew us, and when He does, He proves Himself to us.

    12 Applications from Hebrews 5:11-14: God’s Calling for Every One of Us is to Disciple Others
    SUMMARY: God has revealed our calling in life, He wants us to grow up, get strong, and guide ot
