James Cook University climate scientist Professor Steve Turton talks about the white-form of lemuroid ringtail possum from Queensland's Daintree Rainforest uplands. Researchers call the possum Australia's polar bear because it is also an endangered species. If the ocean continues warming and the mists stop blowing over the uplands to condense on the rainforest canopy where the possums live, these animals will have no water to drink during the dry season. He explains how they disappeared during a recent heatwave and local scientists feared they had become extinct.
They found the possums again in smaller numbers.
