A short flavour of the process and outcomes of this two week residency based in Aberdeen and Alness, Scotland; hosted by Citymoves in Aberdeen and Plan B Creative in Alness.
With financial support from Citymoves; Creative Scotland; and Plan B Creative.
Quietly Untitled is my most recent video work, premiered as part of Ross Whyte's Orphans event on March 4th, 2012 in Aberdeen, Scotland. It's an uncharacteristically (for me) silent work made by manipulating a well known film by another artist-duo who also used manipulated film. There are subtle hints in my video as to what the original film was, if you bother to watch the whole thing. You can read more about it on my blog at: http://www.billthompson.org/theburningharpsichord
CODEX is a silent video featured in my solo exhibition, CRA/CKED, at Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen, 2011. It is influenced by Stan Brakhage, who loved color so much that he would spend months hand painting film stock frame by frame to create stunningly beautiful, and short, abstract films. Unlike Brakhage, however, CODEX was created using a hacking technique called databending in which the codec used to encode a video is purposefully misread/rendered to (I think) beautiful effect.
A sound piece by Bill Thompson developed at Magnetic North's Rough Mix 2013 residency at Tramway, Glasgow. The video documents the public sharing on 22nd March 2013.
It is performed by Ian Spink, Bill Thompson, Kirstin McLean, Charlotte Young, Sean Hay and Sharron Devine.
