On November 8, 2012, three representatives from the non-profit organization Invisible Children, Inc., addressed the Society of Skeptics in Bogle Hall’s Cowan Auditorium at 7 p.m. Usually held on Tuesday evenings, this week’s Skeptics program was moved to Thursday to accommodate the special mock-presidential-election analysis that took place on Election Day.

During the hour-long program, Jonathan Wieland, who is a tri-state region team leader with Invisible Children, spoke about the organization’s mission, which is to bring an end to the activities of Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which has been abducting, killing and displacing civilians in East and central Africa since 1987. The non-profit was founded in2004 to stop LRA atrocities. Jonathan will be accompanied by Sammi Cassin and Brittany Keesling, who will also educate students about the state of affairs in Africa, before showing the film Move.

All Skeptics programs are free and open to the public. The weekly series, which has been in continuous existence since 1977, is one of the premier high school lecture series in the country. The program was an outgrowth of the Blair International Society, begun in 1962, and has served as a forum for the discussion and debate of important national and international issues. Over the past 35-plus years, under the tutelage of Dr. Martin Miller, the series has featured a wide variety of speakers who are engaging, accomplished in their respective fields and often controversial.
