kōläzh is a devised work of performance exploring the life and work of Czech artist Jiří Kolář. It was performed at the Círculo Bellas Artes in Madrid and commissioned by Fundación ONCE as part of their first Biennal of artes escénicas. The material was created in rehearsals by performers Nadia Adame, Silvia Julia and Carla Calparsoro with director and dramaturg Mark Swetz; an unpublished PhD thesis by Dr. Douglas Zullo was a primary resource.
The piece was created with the formal intent of opening performance to the broadest possible audience. Fundaci[on ONCE is an advocacy organisation for people who identify as, or are labeled as disabled. This show particularly focused on aspects of staging that would be available to people with visual or hearing impairments. Questions about the tools and approaches used are addressed in an unpublished research by Mark Swetz on Blind Spectatorship.
