The Rowland S Howard Tribute is being hosted on MESS+NOISE:

The event was The Crystal Ballroom reunion concert AKA The Crystal BOWLroom (since it being held across the road at The Bowlo). Featuring Brownyn Adams from Crime & The City Solution, Ash Wednesday, Little Murder, The Ears & The International Exiles PLUS as a special treat....a ROWLAND S HOWARD tribute.

This is a really important historical and significant event for the original Australian punk scene, that spawned such diverse artists like The Saints, The Birthday Party and Radio Birdman.

Mick Harvey, Phill Calvert, Angela Howard & Ron Rude after one rehearsal got together at The Crystal Ballroom reunion concert and performed a Rowland S Howard tribute of unreleased songs from 1977. Personally, having heard some Young Charlatans poor quality demo and live recordings I was familiar with some of these songs. I was really excited to see them performed live for this one off rare never to be repeated event.

It was a reunion of two key members of Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party. Former Boys Next Door/Birthday Party and Bad Seed, Mick Harvey played for the first time in 30 years with the original drummer, Phill Calvert. Phill played in Boys Next Door and Birthday Party but left after the 1982 acclaimed album, Junkyard. Phill later on joined Blue Ruin with Ian "Quincy" McLean. These days, Quincy is more known as the founder and owner of Bakehouse Studios and with his wife, Helen Marcou organised the Save Live Australia’s Music (SLAM).

These songs were all written by Rowland in 1977, back in the infamous Young Charlatans days. This band comprised of Ollie Olsen (who later went on to form the electronic outfit, Whirlywirld, a string of other band and Max Q with Michael Hutchence of INXS fame), Rowland S Howard (guitar, later in Boys Next Doot and The Birthday Party), Jeff Wegener (former drummer of The Saints, later in the Laughing Clowns) and Janine Hall (later in The Saints).

Rowland Stuart Howard wrote possibly Australia's most enduring cult hit, "Shivers" at the ripe age of 16. Young Charlatans recorded the first version, made famous by the Boys Next Door with Nick Cave singing. Young Charlatans never officially released any recordings but there are poor quality demos and a live recording that has surfaced over the years.

Joining Mick and Phill were Ron Rude on lead guitar, a Melbourne punk who released the sought after solo album in 1979 titled "The Borders of Disgrace". The following year with his band Piano Piano, Ron Rude released "The Vorpal Blade". He best known for staging a hunger strike in the window of local record shop Missing Link Records and the demand that the popular local radio station 3XY play his records.

Finally on bass guitar, it was the first ever stage performance of Rowland S Howard's sister, the lovely Angela Howard.

They played a short set at the Crystal Ballroom reunion gig at a venue that the St Kilda locals call The Bowlo AKA St Kilda Bowls Club, across the road from the now closed iconic punk venue, The Crystal Ballroom.

The songs performed were "AKA", "Model Of Youth", "Broken Hands", "You And/Or Her" and "She Not The Chosen One". I have HD Videos of all of them except for Model Of Youth, as I was photographing stills when they were performing that song.

Here are the links. They are currently password protected.

According to Mick Harvey...."The first song is called 'AKA' and also became a fixture of the Boys Next Door live set in 1978 after Rowland joined and imported it but with Nick singing in a different key." So this song was performed by the Boys Next Door like "Shivers", while the remaining songs "Model Of Youth", "Broken Hands", "You And/Or Her" and "She’s Not The Chosen One", were only ever performed by Young Charlatans.
