Transportation of information and ourselves, this ever moving social and physical network around us, is what fascinates artist and Lodown Magazine-editor-in-chief Thomas Marecki. Travel defines our reality, but we usually don't ask how it is laid out. Why are things running the way they are? Sure it works, but every presence has a million turning points. Sometimes they lead to dead-ends, sometimes to major breakthroughs.

With Garage Grit Marecki wants to change perception and direction. We derive from the past, but tell our own future. Science is fantasy and art is fiction. Information is for everybody, technology has potential beyond controlling our everyday lives and we all travel more than ever before.

Garage Grit presents several artist positions to vehicles and transportation, information and traffic, bricolage and self-induced technology. These positions become manifest in artefacts like car part sculptures and paintings, cut out Google maps, self-made rockets and a poetically recomposed driving game. These are all grouped around the centre piece: a self-made e-Lotus.

All works in Garage Grit document artistic activism against the odds, far forerunning industrial adaptation. Garage Grit wants to trigger the mainstream with grassroots craftsmanship. Of course the electrocar could already be the standard, but it isn’t. Therefore Marecki takes us Back to the Future, surrounded by likeminded artists who are able to suspend the political and economic assumptions that chain us to our present states of travel.

  3. This is a film about a young family and one of their biggest adventures.

In the spring of 2013, Katrin and Lars Schneider, adventure sports photographers from Hamburg, Germany, flew to California with their eight-months old son Fietje, bought a 1971 VW Westfalia camper van and started a road trip through the US Southwest.

The three of them travelled for two months, drove their van around 5.500 kilometers and explored the beautiful nature of the Southwest. They went from California to Nevada and Utah and back to California via Arizona. Along the way they payed a visit to many of the beautiful State and National Parks like Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Valley of Fire, Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon.

They experienced family life on the road and the happiness of life without luxury but with pure freedom. All Katrin, Lars and Fietje needed for these 60 days of exploring easily fit into their small bus. It wasn't always an easy journey but a beautiful experience they'll never forget.

And this was only the first leg of a bigger project – within the next five years or so they plan to come back to the US every now and then and to drive the bus to the East Coast via the most scenic route, to continue with this adventurous road trip.

    Please sit back and enjoy.

And just in case - this is the soundtrack:

    Angel - Hannah Miller
    Beautiful Dream - Fever Fever
    Little Bird - Pancake Breakfast

Life is too short for ugly cars.

Safe. You can choose your means of getting around by price-performance ratio, trunk capacity or color. Or by breakdown statistics. Of even by fuel efficiency. Now that's really safe. And rational. But you can also let your heart and the gasoline in your blood carry you away. That's passion. (Chrome Jewels) sets off with the passion that steers you off the safe path into the irrational lane. The community that meets and exchanges info every day on the internet portal has it's high-octane outing behind it. And often makes everything associated with it—choice of music, clothing and colorful skin—part of their lifestyle. With all the consequences. And a lot of self-confidence.

After a life changing motorcycle accident Steve was paralyzed from the waist down. His love of cars and more importantly Porsche's put him back in the drivers seat. Using hand controls, he is driven by a passion to once again become whole. A big part of the journey has been learning to drive again. His love of Porsche's is only eclipsed by his determination to not be limited by his handicap.
