Cineclectic

(This is one video in a project that contains an interactive switch between low and high ISO. Check out the project at cineclectic.com/videos/wildflowers .)

Our quest with this video was to see how drastically an image could change using only the ISO setting. The idea was to shoot the same image with two identical cameras: one set to a very high ISO, and one to a very low ISO. The thought was that if we had an image with a lot of contrast (very bright brights and very dark darks), then we could put other stuff in the image that sat in the middle of the brightness scale, and they would either be swallowed by the bright or the dark, depending on which camera was seeing it. We’d then connect these two videos together so that the user could click on the video and it would switch from one camera to another, essentially flipping the switch on the ISO at will.

We shot the dance 3 times over: a wide, mid, and closeup, and then I edited them together. I cut the video of one camera and then used that as a template to cut the other footage the same way, so I had two identical videos. Then, when I looked at the second video, there were a bunch of tweaks to do, so I made them and went back to the first and made the same tweaks. After several back and forths, I found a finished product I was happy with for both views.

A few notes: the interactivity of this project requires that two videos are loaded at the same time, which means that the file sizes have to be relatively low for users’ bandwidth to cope. As such, we had to reduce the video quality significantly. Also, the project is incompatible with some browsers.

We toyed with the idea of telling a story using this concept, by putting story elements in the darks and brights of the screen so that the user would actually change the perception of the events by “flipping the switch” back and forth, but in the end, we opted for a safer route, by displaying a beautiful dance. I think it turned out very well. I also think there’s scope for trying another project along these lines with the story idea, but I think it’d cost more time and money than what we have for our little Cineclectic projects.
