Cinema Super 8

  1. Time-lapse super 8 film of a particularly bizarre sunset in the Shenandoah valley of central Virginia. Notice the strange cloud formations and the final blood red skies at the end. Shot in May, 2013.

  2. Camera test for a spring-wound Quartz Super 8 camera I recently purchased on Ebay. The film is Pro 8/13 ASA200 Tungsten balanced, processed and scanned at Pro 8mm in Burbank. Some footage of my laptop and my photography workbench - guest appearance from my Canon 1014 as well. Most of the footage was shot using the 250 filter for the macro shots in the botanical garden, and I shot most of it at 12fps, just to see the effect when I slowed the footage down. The color is a bit muted for my taste. What you see in the botanical garden shots is a speed reduction of 50% in Final Cut on the 24fps scan. This is also an overscan, so you see the entire film frame, plus 10%. Overall, It's *not horrible*, but I probably won't use that 12 fps again. The soundtrack here is "Tideleftovers part 4 & 5" by Twinsistermoon.

  3. I recently bought a wide angle conversion lens for my Canon 1014, so I bought a step-down ring and tried the lens on my Canon 512 as well. The film used here is Pro 8/13 ASA200 tungsten balanced, processed and scanned by Pro 8mm in Burbank. I shot this test in Kenilworth park, DC. Not sure what possessed me to use tungsten balanced film for an outdoor camera test, but results aren't bad. The lens gives a very psychedelic warped tunnel vision effect if the camera lens is not set to "macro" photography. The results, even the close-up are not as sharp as with the Canon 1014, but it's still a good wide angle lens. The soundtrack here is "London's Lost Rivers" by Coil, alternate LP mix.

  4. I bought a cheap Vivitar wide angle lens to use with my Canon 1014, and got some pretty decent results as you can see in the film. The film stock is Daylight Reversal 100D, purchased, processed and scanned at Pro 8mm. The lens was constantly set to infinity with the "Macro" engaged. This is all shot at 18fps, scanned at 24fps, and then reduced the speed to 70% in FC. Love that reversal film richness. The soundtrack here is "I Wish I Could Drown the World in Reverberation" by Twinsistermoon.

  5. Super 8 footage of the DC-based dance collective Urban Artistry shaking the floors at the Blended Art event in 2012. Blended brought together the worlds of street art and graphic design in a collision of music, art, and performance at a soon-to-be-demolished warehouse in the U Street Corridor. The amazing track you hear is "PM Please" by Anton Zap.
