Cinema Super 8

  1. So I was walking down a busy avenue in Bangkok one night and I hear this really loud booming breakbeat, and I see a large crowd of people in a park. The whole scene is illuminated by these portable halogen lights on towers, like you would see at a construction site at night. So of course I run over and witness the coolest spontaneous sight I've ever seen while traveling - this breakdancing contest with an audience of probably 200 people. I was so happy I had my super 8 camera with me - I stayed and filmed for a half hour. I would have shot 8 rolls of film right then and there if I had them all in my backpack. As it stands, this is the 3 minutes worth of film I had at the time.

Audio is two tracks from the incomparable J Dilla - "Shouts (Alt)" and "Body Movin".

  2. Part 1 of 3.
Cinema Super 8 Iceland was shot on location in Reykjavik and the Reykjanes Peninsula, December 2011. The first scene is the sunrise over Reykjavik city center during a snowstorm, filmed from the tower of Hallgrimskirkja Church using a time-lapse attachment. A single frame exposed every 2 seconds for approx 3 hours in the open air. Neither camera or the time-lapse attachment froze, a testament to the durability of Canon craftsmanship in the 1970s, when both units were manufactured.

    Music by order of appearance:
DJ Olive - "Round Fire Strut"
Legendary Pink Dots - "The Game"
    Twilight Circus - "Ergmm"
    Coil - "Magnetic North"

  4. Part 3 of 3.
Cinema Super 8 Iceland was shot on location in Reykjavik and the Reykjanes Peninsula, December 2011. The first part of this sequence was shot in downtown Reykjavik and includes time-lapse footage of the Icelandic Opera House. The building is a very large, contemporary performance center which is covered with pulsating neon lights that seem to dance across the surface in random patterns and colors. I shot the time-lapse sequences in 5 degree weather on a Canon 1014.

    Music by order of appearance:
    Exposed - "Marlow"
    U.M.O. - "UMO One"

  5. Ghosts, gods or monsters? Believe it or not, the imagery in this film is comprised entirely of super 8 footage - although very heavily effected. This is a music video for the track "Fuzzy" from the album Joy of Disease by James Plotkin.
