Going Global: How Cities Can Change the World

EXTREME BY DESIGN, airing in primetime nationally on PBS in 2013, follows a band of college students who design and build products to solve seemingly intractable problems for the world’s poor. One student’s team must create a breathing device to keep babies in Bangladesh from dying of pneumonia. Another seeks a way to store drinking water for Indonesian villagers.

This hour-long documentary film begins on the first day of a Stanford University course called Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability and ends a year later after one group of students returns to Asia to test their device in the field amid plans to launch a startup.

Where in the world do you live? Los Angeles? Lima? Madrid? or Mumbai? Wherever it is, it is likely the answer with which most of us in the world ultimately respond; a city. Whether big or small, dense or sprawled, we...are urbanites. A collection of people who dwell in the cities and metropolises that thrive on creativity, population density and diversity. Places where lives are interwoven into the grid of man-made worlds and where the city, too, weaves itself into new spaces in our global atmosphere. Cities are powerful, influential and forward-thinking. They have governments, and groups of ambitious youth and professionals and innovators. And yet the social problems that challenge our humanity on an international scale are often rooted in the very places we live and work and raise families; in cities. So how then, might cities be the answer to how conflicts can be resolved, rights be restored, help be provided, and futures made possible? How then... can cities change the world? It is here that we shall see!
