Clavier Chronicle (2012-2014)

  1. Ivy started playing piano when she was five. A YAMAHA upright was her first piano. Her parents purchased a KAWAI 5’ grand piano for her in early 80’s as she began her intense training of becoming a piano major in college.

Learning to play piano has also lead Ivy down the path of becoming a first-generation immigrant in the U.S. Ivy left Taiwan (and her KAWAI) behind in 1989 to further her study in piano in the Midwest and then ended up living in the States thereafter. It wasn’t until 2007 when she became a home owner in Portland, Oregon, she reunited with my piano.

In 2012, Ivy came across a report in NY Times about a piano moving company in Pennsylvania transporting pianos from households to the community dump. The video footage of pianos being pushed out of the back of the truck and then crash-landing onto the ground drove her to tears! She was then inspired to embark a journey of collecting piano stories during her travels in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

  2. O'Mara Meehan Piano Movers, in Philadelphia, is a family business circa 1874. Pianos die earlier on the east coast due to the unstable humidity levels, as well as the downturn of economy that caused downsizing of households and closing of churches and schools. O'Mara Meehan has been specialized in safe and cost efficient commercial, private, institutional piano transport, retail piano home delivery and piano storage for Philly, Jersey and NYC for over a century.

  4. Chas M. Stieff was made in 1916. He lives at Karen Parrott's house in Sellwood, Oregon. Karen's son, Justin Ralls learned how to play piano on Chas and now he is a composer.

Chas has been in restoration by Sam Evans and Nick Brogan at Modcott Pianos in Sellwood, Oregon since March 2013.

  5. Pi-Yu Shih is a soprano and theater actress in Taipei. Her parents bought her a YAMAHA upright when she was preparing for entrance exams to college (school of music) back in 1980s. Now Qiao Qiao, her daughter (age 13) plays on the same piano. Pi-Yu was my classmate in college. It was a great visit with her, her daughter and her piano.
