“Access to Survival” 30 minute HD documentary, Winner of 9 awards including the Cine Golden Eagle, Aegis, Communicator and Telly Awards

We traveled to Africa for one month with AED to create a documentary about AED’s successful public-private partnership program entitled “NetMark”. The NetMark program aims to get insecticide treated nets into the hands of the people who need them most. The NetMark program, which began in 1999, has been hugely successful through the partnership of public health (the government’s Health Ministries) and private partners. With their cooperation NetMark has been able to greatly reduce the price of insecticide treated nets, making them available commercially as well as to the needy through the use of voucher programs and free net distributions.

Cocklins Video traveled to Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Senegal to talk to heath officials and ordinary people about malaria and malaria prevention. We filmed in a number of pediatric clinics in Africa and witnessed many children suffering and some dying from malaria. We interviewed Public Health Commissioners as well as pediatric doctors in hospitals and health clinics who told us that using the insecticide treated mosquito nets was making a real difference in combating malaria.

With a crew of 3, Steve Cocklin as DP, Gareth Harvey as Producer/Writer and Anne Cocklin as Sound Recordist and Production Assistant, we spent a week in each country conducting interviews, getting cover footage and going to as many places as possible in a day to witness firsthand the tragedy of malaria. Insecticide treated nets are a simple solution and not expensive, yet nets are beyond the reach of many poor Africans. The numbers of deaths tell the story: 30% of all childhood deaths and 25% of infant deaths are caused by malaria. These are only the reported deaths; other children develop irreversible brain damage, not to mention days spent sick in hospital with fevers and convulsions by children and adults alike. Days are lost to education by sick school children, parents lose income by missing work, and the once you contract it, the treatment for malaria is expensive.

We shot the documentary in high definition using the Panasonic HDX900 camera which is a tape format. As electricity was intermittent or nonexistent, we used a Kino Flo Kamio light (battery operated) and a Wescott system of scrims and reflectors for many of our outside interviews. We did formal and documentary style interviews in the locations in which we found ourselves. We used a stereo microphone and professional audio mixer, wireless microphones, etc.

We found ourselves on top of vans shooting a woman riding in a horse and cart, at the fishing port as ships came in loaded with fish, in crowded markets, on ferries shooting port scenes, running into musicians playing for rapper P-ditty’s arrival, placing cameras outside of cars, etc.

The NetMark program combines the knowledge and resources of public health ministries and private companies to make, distribute and sell mosquito nets; provide advertising and education awareness to the general public on the importance of mosquito nets; and encourages small local businesses in country to supply the nets which provide employment, awareness, and a sustainable supply of nets for the future.

In addition to the 30 minute documentary and trailer, closed captioned in English with optional French subtitles, we also created 3 short vignettes to be used as marketing tools on individual aspects of the program. The documentary, vignettes and trailer are authored on a DVD, and made available for streaming on the internet.

AED References:

"The Cocklins produced a 30 minute documentary film, Access to Survival, for AED in 2008/9 which won nine film awards. Their work is outstanding. As supervising producer, I worked closely with the Cocklins for nearly 14 months on this complicated multi-deliverable production. They are responsive to client requests and easy to work with. Because the DP is also the editor, savings and efficiencies in post production is attainable because the film is lit and shot with editing in mind. The Cocklins can produce in HD and standard definitions and across digital platforms. I heartily recommend the Cocklins for any size video production, and would look forward to a chance to work with them again."
