COFIA

COFIA (Circle of Friends in Action) Founder, Carolyn Othieno delivers a surprise Pen Pal letter to an 8th grade student in Tacoma, Washington. Months ago, Alexis made a donation to COFIA of supplies and resources for underprivileged students at St. Jude's Primary School in Rubongi, Uganda. In the bag of donations, Alexis included stationary with envelopes, stamps, a prayer card, along with a note asking to be matched with a Pen Pal in Uganda. COFIA, a non-profit based in Tacoma, offers younger elementary students the chance to have Pen Pals at St. Jude's in Rubongi. In Uganda however, primary/middle school ends in the 7th grade. Most children in Rubongi, do not pass the national exam, and are then not allowed to move on to secondary school. Carolyn Othieno was so touched by Alexis's desire to have a friend in Uganda and her kind heart, she made arrangements to have Alexis matched up with an 8th grader named Emily, who is attending school in Kampala, thanks to help from the Othieno family. "Emily" is originally from Rubongi, and attended St. Judes. On June 6, 2013, Carolyn visited Alexis at school to deliver the letter from Uganda, and share the news with her class.
