Courtaulds: Colours Of The World Project 2014

Courtaulds Red Scar rayon plant in Preston was demolished in the early 1980s. Many people living in Preston today have no idea what it was, where it was and what it meant to Preston. During April 2014 I made this project introduction film to tell the story of the factory and of the rayon it produced between 1939-1980. My thanks are given to Barney Smith, The Preston Digital Archive on Flickr and Keith Sergeant for archive photos. Also to Lancashire libraries for archive maps.

+ More

"Colours Of The World; Made In Preston" is a project created by Dovetail and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. During May & June 2014 a series of creative community events were held in Preston to bring former employees and their families together to share memories of the Courtaulds rayon factory which employed thousands of people between 1939-1980. I was privileged to work on this project as film maker and oral historian.
This channel is a collection of all the film and audio material collected. There are films of each separate event followed by a collection of individual audio interviews with former employees or family members who share their personal memories and stories of working for Courtaulds.
There is a lot of material in this archive. If your time is tight then please at least watch the first two film items which are the project introduction film and the final evaluation documentary "Made In Preston; Our Story." After that just take your pick for more in depth information and memories.....
