Shellharbour City Council's Aboriginal Advisory Committee (AAC) celebrated its 15th anniversary with a special event on Monday 25 November 2013. It is one of the longest and continuous standing local government Aboriginal Advisory Committees in NSW.
The Shellharbour City Council Aboriginal Advisory Committee has performed an integral role in establishing protocols that address the needs and wishes of the Aboriginal community.
The special celebration of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee was attended by former and current members of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee, as well as current and former government representatives including Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson and former Throsby MP, Colin Markham.
Hundreds of young Shellharbour City residents took part in a special environmental program that enabled creative thinking and ultimately, action on how to reduce harmful pollution such as waste and litter. Council collaborated with Illawarra Environmental Education Centre and Take 3 to activate local high schools and the involvement of students in creating and fulfilling action plans to help the local and global environment.
