After farming
/ by Yoshihiko Hogyoku

A clump of dirt flies from my rubber boots
In the sunlight dancing among the lush summer gingko leaves,
It flitters, falls
Crumbling this side of parting memory
Along the barricade, a row of police stand
Glittering dots paint a stippling landscape
That’s my home
As I point, the officers swoop in to ask what’s going on
I should be the one inquiring
These amicable young men
From the South
What ill winds carry them to Tohoku?
Portending skies somewhere beyond echo the sound of more explosions
From a blackened cauldron perched on a white collar
Droops a molten tongue
My thoughts are contaminated by newspaper words alone
Across the abandoned land
A faceless storm rages, hurling thunderbolts
On a temporary return home
My father finds the tutelar gingko tree, torn asunder
Our symbols slip away in time
On the stippling sketch, the gingko’s sparkle dies
From somewhere, I hear myself chuckling
The carefree laughter of youthful days
8 years, 30 years,
24,000 years from now,

On our fields of sweet memory
My father and I still walk
8 years, 30 years,
24,000 years from now,
On these dear fields,
In quietude, homeward wending
Wind rustles the thickening foliage
The first Kaempfer cicadas cheep
My aging father can’t hear their call, but I know it
On this silent land, it is all too clear
A clump of dirt flies from my rubber boots
In the sunlight dancing among the lush summer gingko leaves,
It flitters, falls
Crumbling, that side of parting memory

“Contellusion” is a cooperative project assessing geographical places by GPS and representing the coordinates through a tangible vision. When we draw a line between each point on the earth a shape comes up, and when we visualize it to something in our memory a motif is set on the Earth. We call this, Contellusion, referring to the Latin word Tellus, meaning “with the Earth”. The performance is constructed by inlaying music and poems in an art performance, and presenting recorded memories on film.

Contellusion Project:

Yoshihiko Hogyoku _ Lyrics and voice
Miya _ Music
Leo Pellegatta _ Film and photography
