Convivial Portfolio

For about three years (1994-1997) Convivial focused all of its efforts exclusively on the design & production of game experiences targeted just for girls (ages 7 to 12). Convivial created, designed & produced two series of product lines for girls based on extensive, nation wide market research studies. Mattel bought these gender-based product lines after the production of the second follow-up game in each series. “Secret Paths in the Forest & Rockett's New School.” Patricia Gian Antelles was the Co-Producer & Creative Director of the series.

Convivial documented for Interval Research, funded by Vulcan Ventures -Paul Allen’s company, every aspect of every system developed under nondisclosure. Systems for massive photography, graphic & design document accessed by artists in many locations via LANs & high bandwidth servers in different cities to the Convivial Studios in San Francisco were employed. A comprehensive relational data base asset management kept track of each asset’s use & tagged with metadata for extensive search capabilities. CD jukeboxes were accessed throughout our studios & remotely via T1 lines.

High quality sound, music & dialog were mixed at Convivial’s studios & large sound libraries were created for use & reuse on products. Most importantly, Convivial invented Time-Based Management Pre-visualization editing stations & techniques for story-boarding with dialogue & sound for editorial screenings & reviews before the products were produced as high end animations + sound + dialogue + programming. Convivial created Time-Based Management workstation workflows making use of nonlinear editing stations beyond typical digital video editing techniques. Pre-visualization prototypes for product development greatly reduced the development costs of products. Melinda Hess was the Director of Time-Based Media at Convivial Studio in San Francisco.
