1. Photo Exhibit and Book presentation
    PRESENTATION
Oscar Medrano Pérez is a veteran photographer working with Caretas Magazine since 1979. The photo exhibit in Germany "NEVER AGAIN" is a celebration of more than 50 years of outstanding photojournalism. He is based in Lima, Peru.
His new book “NUNCA MAS-NEVER AGAIN! Edited by Fondo Editorial of the Peruvian Congress, is part of the photographic history of Peru in contemporary times. It's showing hundreds of photographs of destruction and death during the period of internal violence that affected mostly the Andean people in this country in two decades. This terrible violence was the direct outcome of the emergence of Sendero Luminoso, an armed Maoist political organization, that brought a wave of turbulence and brutality to Peruvian life. The Peruvian government’s intervention in 1992 eventually managed to put an end to the violence by capturing Sendero's top leader, Abimael Guzmán Reynoso.
    With this photo
exhibit and his first acclaimed book, Medrano's pictures show us the wives, mothers, and daughters, and the many orphaned children who suffered the loss of their loved ones -- on both sides of the conflict. We also learn of the establishment of self-defense committees organized by Andean community members, which called themselves “Ronderos" (civilian patrols), during the years of violence. Medrano managed to gain access to distant and remote villages in Peru in the immediate aftermath of many terrorist attacks, such as the villages of Lucanamarca and Huaychau. The image of the lacerated face of Edmundo Camana Sumari, one of seven survivors of the slaughter at Lucanamarca, became famous and appears in this selection of photographs with a bandage over his head that covers one eye. Medrano and other photojournalists participated in the photo exhibit "Yuyanapaq: To remember", in 2010, in which they exhibited many shocking images representing the 20 years of internal armed conflict in Peru.
