Inspired by Darwin's final words in On the Origin of Species: "It is interesting to contemplate a tangled bank, clothed with plants of many kinds... with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent upon each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us."

Darwin Originals is a series of eight artists’ films inspired by the life, work and legacy of Charles Darwin.

Each film explores the artists’ personal fascinations with Darwin, from the meals Emma Darwin prepared for her invalid husband, to the continent of plastic waste in today’s Pacific Ocean, from Darwin’s ‘thinking path’ at Down House, to the genetics of red hair.

Darwin Originals was produced in 2009 to mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species.
