"Debt Trap" (2008) is a one-hour documentary that examines why Canadians are carrying unprecedented personal debt loads. Although the film was completed and aired on Global Television's Global Currents series just before the world economic crash in 2008, the stories remain just as relevant today. "Debt Trap" looks beyond blaming individuals to examine the larger economic forces that have pushed people into debt. These include a multi-billion dollar debt industry of banks, credit card companies and other lenders which, over the past few decades, have deliberately targeted large segments of society (baby boomers, students, the poor) to lure them into debt, not to mention government and business economic policies that have decimated the middle class and left millions of families without access to secure, living-wage jobs. This 8-minute excerpt from the film includes comments from Brett Williams, author of the book "Debt for Sale", and introduces us to Jennifer and Somxay, two young people who candidly share their struggles with credit card debt. The film is produced by Howard Fraiberg of Proximity Films (proximityfilms.ca). Excerpt running time: 8:43 For more information or to purchase please visit debttrapdocumentary.com
