  2. This ‘‘rose-flavored’’ performance evokes the beauty and wealth of the Middle-Eastern culture. I speak about meeting, about conviviality and mutual enrichment. After a tempestuous Arab Spring, where people fought for freedom of expression and individual rights, and faced with growing anti-Islamic sentiments in our region, I have chosen to question the contemporary customs in the East as in the West. I wear a mini-dress cut to resemble the 1960s style, referencing sexual freedom, women’s lib movement, to the conquest of the space. I use a visual design reflecting the 1980s, such as disco, video games, and entertainment. I dance and address the public at the same time, singing with a rhythmical musical accompaniment inspired by Egyptian pop music of the 1990s. My dress consists of 124 lokum cubes (Turkish delight) of increasing size, which light up and draw motives in movement, synchronized with the music.

    During the performance I'm wearing electrodes on both arms and I try to wear makeup. Involuntary muscle contractions caused by electric shock are very strong so that I cannot control the hands and the makeup spreads all over my face. We hear the chorus of Nabucodonosor by Giuseppe Verdi, which has a very strong symbolic value in the history of my country, bringing along the ghosts of old struggles for freedom that no one remembers anymore. “My country, fair and lost”. The hysterical, uncontrollable, movement of the hand represents the disease of social habit, which reveals its fragility when the system appears on the point of collapsing: the deep conflict between a conscious behaviour and external social conditioning. Even crying is involuntary, caused by the black pencil and mascara entering my eyes since I cannot calibrate the movement of the hand. A mechanical cry that is automatically transmitted to the audience, in a sort of empathic conditioned connection, unconscious and therefore completely useless.

    Durante la performance indosso degli elettrodi su entrambe le braccia e cerco di truccarmi il viso. Le contrazioni involontarie causate dall'impulso elettrico sono fortissime, impedendo il movimento naturale e consapevole, e il makeup si sparge da tutte le parti in maniera incontrollabile. In sottofondo ascoltiamo il coro del Nabucco, un brano simbolo della storia nazionale che porta con se' il fantasma di antiche lotte per la libertà che nessuno ricorda più. Anche il pianto è involontario, causato dalla matita nera e dal rimmel che entra negli occhi perché non riesco a controllare il movimento della mano. Un pianto meccanico che attraverso quei dettagli ravvicinati degli occhi sofferenti, si trasmette altrettanto automaticamente a chi guarda, in una sorta di collegamento empatico condizionato, inconsapevole e quindi del tutto inutile. Una performance sul condizionamento sociale, ma anche sull'isterica e grottesca meccanicità di alcuni gesti rituali, semplici ma profondamente simbolici come quello di truccarsi, rendersi presentabili, prendersi cura di se', in un contesto devastato e sull'orlo del baratro. Il movimento parkinsoniano, eterodiretto, della mano, rappresenta il disagio di una società al collasso in cui si è interrotto il collegamento tra mente e corpo, tra volontà e possibilità di scegliere.
    La performance fa parte di WITH AN HELMET, un progetto più ampio costituito da performance, video e installazioni fotografiche. Il progetto nasce con un video realizzato nell'ottobre del 2012. Nel video applico sul suo braccio destro elettrodi terapeutici, regolati al massimo della potenza, che determinano forti contrazioni muscolari. Le contrazioni fanno danzare sulla mia pelle una minuscola bandierina da cocktail, al ritmo dell'inno nazionale. A un paese malato non resta che la routine della retorica e lo spasmodico appello ad un rispetto preteso ma svuotato di ogni sentimento autentico.

    There is poetry in the way people communicate, how interpretations of language, verbal and non-verbal generate meaning or lack of meaning. Intention is interpreted and our own inner dialog rests like stones on our tongues. The residue of language is held between us as it falls, slips or is thrown. The problems addressed in the work range from the psychology of the individual to the social science’s study of relationship and the contemporary artistic notions of conversation as art.

    This forty minute collaborative performance piece was set as a tableaux and occurred inside of a traditional gallery. Rae entered the space first, symbolically wearing a bridal gown, she poured the cream from pitchers into the stacked bowls making sure there was no spillage. The table was placed near a window and with a downward gaze she stood and poured, remarking on Vermeer’s painting “The Milkmaid.” Rae waited for her groom for five minutes. Thomas entered and sat down harshly after much stomping. With hands on the dark wood table, they stared at one another and seemed to say nothing and everything across the distance. Separated by bowls that had been filled carefully to the brim they began the dance of conversation. Using imagery from Mark Strand’s poem “To Begin” their mouths were filled dark grey stones. They took turns removing one stone at a time. These stones or intentions were dropped or slid into the cream. As they disappeared from sight, the cream overflowed onto the table, onto the grey fabric, that spilled over and onto the floor, as a waterfall.

    This is the first work in a series by Thomas and Rae, exploring the psychology and poetry of communication in relationship. The next in the series will be performed at Amos Eno Gallery, Brooklyn, NY.

Dimanche Rouge is an international experimental performance event based in Paris, France, taking place every third Sunday of the month. Dimanche Rouge showcases a variety of performances including but not limited to multimedia, audiovisual, sound, graffiti, actions, dance, body art, and interventions. In addition, experimental performers whose work is not generally seen in art venues, such as masseurs, coiffures, cooks, knitters, tatoo designers, and jewelry makers are welcomed to participate and invite members of the public to carry out their performances. Finally, Dimanche Rouge also exhibits installations, photographs, and paintings by artists performing at the events.
