The mount Sasso Nero (3,368 meters above sea level) is situated in the Aurine Alps in the heart of the Zillertal’s Alps.
The border between Italy and Austria is on the top of this mountain. At 2,923 meters, there is a mountain hut, which was built in 1894. It is the Vittorio Veneto hut (Schwarzensteinhütte), which is open in March, for alpine ski, and for three months in summer, from July till the end of September.
This mountain hut is a shelter for solitary excursionists, and for those who are looking for an unreal and total silence, typical of the mountains, near the glacier.
