Étude Op. 88, No. 1 (2017)
The work examines the piano as an instrument and the 88 notes of the piano.
The video is created from scanned opal stones; each one represents one of the 88 notes of the piano. The video is animated with a computer (not computer generated), manually created through multiple processes. I use sampled piano notes through the use of midi as material that I in a sense animate. There is a direct link between what is seen and heard, the image of a single stone and the sound of a single note are a combined visual and musical composition.
The video/music piece is accompanied with seven prints Étude Op. 88, No. 2/3/4/5/6/7/8. The prints are the visual manifestation of certain note combinations or harmonic structures, sound materialized in a still image.
