In Munich, Die Neue Sammlung (The New Collection), State Museum of Applied Art and Design, is hosting a retrospective dedicated to the history and production of Driade. The specially staged exhibition will be held in its new premises inaugurated in 2002, the Pinakothek der Moderne. From 14th September 2006 the Rotunda of the Pinakothek and its surrounding spaces will be occupied by furniture, objects and images covering the company’s development.
In 2007 Driade is celebrating the long and creative artistic association that has linked it to Philippe Starck since 1984. The occasion is being marked by a new collection with a strong emotional and material impact, proposing an all-round design for a habitat that brings together pieces of high sculptural, expressive and material quality.
The new driade 2007 collection is developed in four themes: research into different languages with Philippe Starck’s project; home furnishing with the designs of Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez and Rodolfo Dordoni; reissues in a limited edition collection of icon-pieces from Driade’s aesthetic research; and the completion of the Naoto Fukasawa’s project.
A spring evening, in one of the many wonderful courtyards concealed by the city of Milan, a gathering of people filled with curiosity assembles to be amazed and entranced by the beauty and magic offered by that secret spot.
At the entrance to the courtyard one’s gaze hangs in the ethereal, smooth and pure vision of a surreal world, a garden of large white balloons. With an outward appearance of softness, they seem like delicate and immaculate snowflakes dancing lazily between earth and sky.
A gentle sound sweeps through the space, the music becomes more intense, the balloons follow the rhythm and suddenly the courtyard is animated by sinuous bodies that move, dance and play in this place where everything seems softened.
Shortly after, while the strange characters return to their torpor, a heavenly voice cuts through and invites the people to follow it to another magical sloping courtyard. The melodious singing awakens a figure suspended in the air which flies with its soft flakes and dances back and forth to its inspiring muse as if performing a pas de deux.
The white is the space between one image and the next where the eye does not linger, where the forms are all alike and yet all different…
…At the boundaries of the sky, where sky and earth take each other by the hand, on that small indistinct island between the waves of life, every night a dream continues to switch on its small white light, while someone looks on smilingly.
