Maman Monique Misenga Mukuna was born and reared in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She studied French and history at university in Kinshasa, the capital, and graduated with a teaching degree. For some years she taught secondary school and was a principal. Then she became a very successful business woman. During this time she was also informally teaching income-generating activities to women in her church. This led to full-time work leading the women’s department of her denomination. In 1999 she and some friends founded a non-profit by women for women, to fight violence against women and female poverty. Since its beginning Maman Monique has been the visionary leader of this organization, Woman, Cradle of Abundance, which now serves hundreds of women, girls, and orphans.
