The 3rd and last film of my short film series "Strangers in Amsterdam." A British lady has come to Amsterdam to be a star, but she faces reality. This film is for dreamers living in the city.
I keep getting sent Vimeo links to documentaries. People send them to me and say "You've got to look at this!" And there's things that really stand out. One is that they're clearly using a lot of DSLRs and it looks nice, but that narrow depth of field all the time becomes a little bit oppressive after a while. It has almost created a whole language of its own, the DSLR. It is a little universe of visual language that from my modest point of view is quite restrictive (…) It's also the structure of these indie DSLR documentaries. They are just so formatted and so alike, following a recipe time and time again, it is so standardised. It looks beautiful, but when you watch a lot of these things it is as if you are in a whole genre by itself, the DSLR-shot Vimeo doc genre. I'm not down on them, it is just so unadventurous..
