1. The latest dance production of the German/Chilean El Cuco Project plays – in an uncanny, dramatical and comical way- with the contradictory relationship between humans and animals. The choreographer Sonia Franken and the visual artist Gonzalo Barahona create a productive space between representation and confusion by means of very authentic looking masks of a cat and a bird. The two performers have composed a bizarre “Baroque-Tragedy“ using sculptures, drawings and video projections. Interplay between visual and auditory senses occur and vary between banality and drama. Equivalent to a Möbius loop “My reputation is your guarantee” plays with continuous rotation, turning and a paradoxical loop, rather than a linear story. elcucoprojekt.com

  2. In Acts of Politeness, two human-animal figures, a cat and a bird, interact using western politeness codes with instinctive animal movements. The contradictory relationship between humans and animals creates a new changeable aesthetic concept which El Cuco Projekt choreographer Sonia Franken and fine artist Gonzalo Barahona explore together using the experimental area of body and masks. /// elcucoprojekt.com

    >> We all know these moments where we struggle to keep a good profile: from pure politeness and tact we make offers, compliments, visits, address formally, inquire or keep silent, give a little cough, eat, drink or do without. What would happen if animals were to exhibit the same etiquette? If then survival strategies and strategies for polite behavior come together?

  4. For the SoloDuo Festival Sonia Franken and Gonzalo Barahona took the challenge of creating 9 minutes of atavistic situations wherein two figures interact and play with human and animal behaviour. These combinations generate an atmosphere on the cutting edge of humorous playfulness and relapsing uncanniness. elcucoprojekt.com
In 'El Cuco Projekt' Sonia Franken and Gonzalo Barahona experiment with articulating Visual Arts and Choreography in a creative autonomous combination. Human bodies with animal masques in movement generate dissimilar characters, which are at the same time sculptures, paintings and cartoons. The masques are designed with exaggerated naturalism, which attempt to confuse the perception of the audience: giving more the impression of animal heads, as the mere known representation of animals.

Departing and central point of our aesthetic creation is playing with/ creating movement and (animal) masques. We are fascinated by the simultaneity of the animation of a mask and the objectification of the human body: having the potential of a figure, sculpture, painting, and cartoon.
