Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series

The University of Essex presents a series of special events throughout the year celebrating excellence in research undertaken by our recently appointed Professors. In this lecture, Professor Philip Terry from the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies talks about his new novel, tapestry. Taking as its starting point marginal images in the Bayeux Tapestry, which have been left largely unexplained by historians, Professor Terry retells the story of the Norman Conquest from the point of view of the English nuns who embroidered the tapestry in the eleventh century. Combining magic realism and Oulipian techniques, this is a tour de force of narrative and language.
