We have talented neighbors. If you live in Raleigh or the across the Triangle, you have seen them in fantastic live theater, independent short films, great improv shows, storied music venues, dance exhibitions, stand-up routines, roller derby, gouge wrestling, staged readings, and just being their awesome selves around town.
We wanted to encourage and showcase these amazing people. So we first asked what we could do. And we heard over and over that they would love more opportunities to perform on film. Frustratingly, without already having on-camera experience, they were having trouble finding on-camera work.
We asked Christ the King church if we could use their space for 3 days. Then we sent out emails to actors, improvisers, comedians, drag artists, wrestlers and musicians. We asked our professional film and video friends to borrow their cameras and gear, and if they would be willing to help and donate a weekend doing something fun. We asked exceptional make-up artists if they would volunteer their time and expertise to create the personally appropriate on-camera look for each performer. We asked friends who who had never been on-set before it they wanted to learn and be a part of something unique. It was a mixed bag of salty vets and passionate hobbyists, and everyone who came was thrilled and dedicated to the pure creativity that we rarely see happen on a commercial, corporate, or cookie-cutter TV and movie set.
In only 2, short production days, we filmed 49 shorts scenes drawing from the spirit of old Hollywood screen tests. We eschewed visual perfection in favor of capturing genuine moments and raw, natural talent.
We reached out to editors, pestered editors, grovelled to editors and they turned what we filmed into great scenes. Now we begin to bring them to you.
