Phil and Helen are sibling immigrants who want to improve their status in a dystopic meritocratic society. They turn to the black market to buy access to a higher strata of the hierarchy. Phil uses the 'codes' but pretends to have lost them, thus leaving Helen behind at the bottom of the society.
But there is a payment due. In return for his new lifestyle, Phil must provide his imagination and submit himself to being plugged into the state mainframe for the rest of his life. Desperate, he turns to his sister for help, realizing that his imagination is too precious a thing to lose in return for becoming a machine - cut-off from the emotional distractions of human life. However, hIs resistance is futile.
