1. Expectations is a one-hour film, broadcast on public television in 1986, presented to the PBS network by WNET-TV.

Expectations is about the loss of industrial jobs, told through the stories of steelworkers and their families in East Los Angeles.

The themes of Expectations, the destruction of the middle class, the movement of industry and jobs out of the U.S., and the first generation to do worse than their parents, are as urgent today as they were 30 years ago.

Expectations reflects and informs our current political debates.

A tragedy of wasted talent and ability is revealed in the story of the steelworkers’ food bank, feeding thousands of out-of-work union members side-by-side with poor Mexican immigrants.

Expectations was directed and photographed by Michael Marton.
It is narrated by John Lithgow, with music featuring Mose Allison and Ry Cooder.
