Season 1, Beginnings - 'Stuart Whitton'
Trying to cover all types of creativity this year has brought us to meet some wonderful people. However, someone who possibly wins the award all the others for being purely ‘the nicest person’ is who we are highlighting in our latest film - Stuart Whitton.
We were very keen to meet an illustrator who, by all intents and purposes, had a particular type of special talent that we thought would grace our continuing series.
We were introduced by Handsome Frank’s Tom Robinson, who highlighted the story of a boy from Wales coming to ‘the big smoke’ to make it in illustration. Tom asked if we'd be interested and we jumped at the chance. Handsome Frank is a leading illustration agency in the UK (check out some of their other illustrators to see what we mean by "leading").
One thing that we are continuing to learn as we meet more people is that their passion is very much the driving force behind their creativity. Most are blind to the talent, adulation or money. Most just want to show people what they are so passionate about.
This is very much true of Stuart. Watching him draw at first hand, you actually recognise the way he visualises the object in front of him and then manages to capture all the detail, texture and most importantly, character of it. I’ve been interested in illustration from an early age and is the one part of creative arts that I have a secret desire to learn!
Also, what a beautiful park we managed to shoot in. Victoria Park, for anyone who hasn’t been there, is set in Tower Hamlets, which you may think (based on reputation) may not be the best setting. However, what a treat it was! We had great service from the ‘park café’ who served up lovely treats and food for us all day. The setting is also something to behold and a little gem of East London. A ‘little gem’ is also the best way to describe Stuart and his illustration.
