The Vanguard Way Marathon is a tough out and back course with some stunning views and two very steep climbs on the return leg. Starting at Lloyd Park in South Croydon it makes its way 13 miles out of London crossing the M25 before turning round and coming all the way back. I loved it, but I also loved the Strawberry Frappe I purchased at the end.
The Brecon Beacons Ultra is a 46 mile race over two 23 mile laps in the Welsh Hills. With 5784ft of ascent you will be no stranger to a hill after this. You can read a full race report here filmmyrun.com/brecon-beacons-ultra-2014
On November 14th 2014 five ne'er-do-wells from Worthing and District Harriers showed up at Likeys Adventure Sports shop in Brecon, South Wales to sign in. Armed with some X-Bionics kit to test they set off to Talybont to eat pub food and stay in a B&B.
The next morning, with only one man prepared to wear the official Worthing Harriers vest, they set off on a nine hour jaunt over the Welsh countryside. With stunning views and perfect weather, it was a day none will ever forget.
This film tells the story in brief. If you want to run the Beacons Ultra. If you think you can do 46 miles on your feet, then hop on over to beaconsultra.com/ and sign up for next year.
For the record Grant Patterson, Scott Kendall and Richard Shlovogt finished in 8 hours and 47 minutes, in 28, 29 and 30th place. Stephen Cousins finished in 9 hours and 25 minutes in 49th place and Mark Williams completed the course in 9 hours and 45 minutes in 64th position.
The film features an interview with Rob Young, marathonmanuk.com who is running a marathon a day in 2014, in a kilt, just because his girlfriend reckoned he couldn't run one marathon. He has been injured so this was his first marathon for a couple of weeks.
Also, I talk to Emma Sawyer. This was her second marathon. Her first was in Mexico City, where she works as a translator. She finished in 3 hours 36 minutes. Watch out for the sprint finish with Stuart Bradley, runner number 196.
The film features the brilliant tune ISON by Mat Playford, available here on iTunes.
Lisbon Marathon 2014 - On October 4th 2014 I travelled to Lisbon in Portugal with my wife, where we met our friends Tanya and Richard. The day after, both Richard and I ran the 2014 Lisbon Marathon. You can read the race report at stephencousins.co.uk/lisbon-marathon-2014/
This is the short story of our trip. We stayed in Cascais at the Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel, very near the race start line.
The music used in the film is called 'Greece 2000' and is by Three Drives On A Vinyl and can be purchased here...
My first marathon of 2015. Sussex Trail Events' Dark Star River Marathon. The marathon is actually 28 miles long rather than the normal 26.2. The route follows the River Adur for 10 miles inland until it takes the Downs Link path to the turn point at the old West Grinstead Railway Station at 14 miles. We run back down the railway line and rejoin the Adur running back on the other side of the river to the start/finish at Shoreham Scout Hut.
