  3. Visual Effects guru and a man who has designed the template for Vfx in films, Doug Trumbull is a true genius. Known for his ground breaking work on Kubrick's epic future forward film "2001," Doug Trumbull is a fascinating man to listen to and certainly holds court when he speaks about his craft. The SOC presented a Technical achievement award in 2009 for Trumbull's development of the Slit Scan process of motion picture cinematography.

    OK, i already know what you're saying, why buy what i can make out of a shopping bag? Easy: This is already stoopid cheap, and it works better, and won't make you look like an amateur.

    Do not aspire to be like everybody else. I feel so sad when students my students try to emulate their favorite directors. They destroy their own visions before they even start making films. Don't be afraid to fail a little and listen to the ciritcs. Pay only attention to what people say is WRONG. That is what you must cultivate. It is the only thing that makes you different.

    Less Speilberg. More Kelly Reichardt. Less Haneke, more Denis Côté.
    ]
    Less Tarantino, more CARLOS REYGADAS. More Lucretia Martel. Stop emulating crappy interchangable mainstream filmmakers.

    It is like cutting your own throat. Say something new and say it in a different way: YOUR way. Know the great filmmakers. Don't follow the herd. Don't worship the critics.

    Read Robert Bresson's book NOTES ON CINEMATOGRAPHY. You need only this one book to find out all you need to know about great filmmaking.
