If there is one piece of equipment that will improve your movies it has to be the tripod. I know, the tripod is the ugly brother of video accessories. Who wants to lug one around on vacation, or trip over it during a party? But buying, and using, a tripod can make a world of difference to your movies.

In this episode of the Media Notes series you will learn more than just the basics of how to choose a tripod that works for you. I'll show you how to keep your camera stable when you are stuck without your camera's legs and how to finally put that ugly table lamp to good use..

For thousands of tech-heads, the Consumer Electronics Show is a trip to Candy-land. Bright shiny lights, glowing screens, and a preview of next Christmas’ “Must Have” toys. But this is more than a celebration of our insatiable consumerism; CES affords an opportunity to observe how technology is changing a product in one fell swoop. Here you can easily see the trends and make connections you might otherwise miss.

While there's usually sameness to a given category's product announcements at any trade show, there was an especially striking uniformity to the cameras and camcorders debuting at CES 2010. That is not necessarily bad. You can argue that it is evidence of some business maturation and a general move by the industry to reduce the fragmented types and categories of cameras. Sure there will always be a significant number of camera models out there; that is the way the system works. But there are pronounced moves to common standards in media, file formats and camera features. For the consumer, that reduces confusion. For companies like Apple, Avid & Microsoft, that reduces the variables you have to code for. Everyone wins.
