Film School - Filmmaking

  1. Before this video will make any sense, you should know about my DIY BodyPod project found at vimeo.com/9635954

    A BodyPod is not a tripod. It's basically a hacked up monopod that provides additional stabilization by attaching a strap to the body. (as seen here vimeo.com/9635954 )

    These are sticks that are used to take a photo of yourself by mounting a point-and-shoot at the end of it. Well, this is what i'm running around with now for extra camera stability. It's much more compact, lightweight, and much more discreet than a cut monopod. I can't speak on other versions of these little stick things, but the model i'm using has some real strength to it to be used as a 'BodyPod'. Do not aspire to be like everybody else. I feel so sad when students my students try to emulate their favorite directors. They destroy their own visions before they even start making films. Don't be afraid to fail a little and listen to the ciritcs. Pay only attention to what people say is WRONG. That is what you must cultivate. It is the only thing that makes you different.

    Less Speilberg. More Kelly Reichardt. Less Haneke, more Denis Côté.
    ]
    Less Tarantino, more CARLOS REYGADAS. More Lucretia Martel. Stop emulating crappy interchangable mainstream filmmakers.

    It is like cutting your own throat. Say something new and say it in a different way: YOUR way. Know the great filmmakers. Don't follow the herd. Don't worship the critics.

    Read Robert Bresson's book NOTES ON CINEMATOGRAPHY. You need only this one book to find out all you need to know about great filmmaking.
