Before we get to our couple’s wedding day story, we would like to just provide a brief background about the cameras and the technology used to capture this beautiful and elegant 4k wedding film.

The individuals that do know what 4k resolution stands for must be thinking how did we manage to film a wedding using 3 Red Epic cameras. Just a background for the individuals who don’t know what 4k resolution is, it’s the future of digital video and digital television. HD TV has 1080p resolution which is composed of two million pixels (1920 x 1080), while a 4K TV (aka Ultra High Definition) has over eight million pixels (3840 x 2160). Therefore, 4K has around four times more resolution than 1080p and produces a clearer picture. But in order for you to experience 4k properly you must have a 4k TV or Monitor. Even though cable companies are at least a few years away from broadcasting 4k signal, digital channels like Netflix already has 4k content and iTunes are not too far away from doing so.

In 2013, James and Jessica contacted us to find out if we offered 4k wedding films. During that time, we were already using our Red Epic and Scarlet as our 4th camera for our wedding films, corporate films and documentary film projects. We didn’t really think about using all 4k cameras to capture wedding films since it takes up a lot of data for storage, editing and backup purposes. To put things in perspective, at the wedding we filmed everything in 5k so we are able to work with real state in post production. We had 1.7 TB worth of RED SSDs and 128 gb lasted for 30 minutes. So just imagine how much card swapping we were doing as the wedding day went by. In total, we used 3.1 TB worth of space for footage from all 3 cameras.

The one thing that we didn’t want to jeopardize with so much technology was the story element of their wedding film. We wanted to make sure nothing got lost in the story and that we feel we have done an outstanding job in making sure that story stays above everything else.

On the day of the wedding, we had 3 Red Epics with Cine-Lenses from Canon & Zeiss. We used Cinevate Duzi Slider and Steadicam for our motion shots. For a wedding, we have never had a shot list as we always believe in filming things as they happen and always to our toes to capture the moments. However, when you are dealing with a large amount of data, constantly downloading footage from the SSD Card on to a drive, backing it up and getting that card ready for next set of shoot then you have to be prepared. We had an extensive shot list so we know what needed to be filmed.

There have been Red Epic weddings done by others with a single or two cameras but to our knowledge there hasn’t been one with 3 cameras all filmed on 5k resolution with 4k cameras. Having filmed it in 5k allowed us to digitally zoom in on some of the shots and make it look like 4 or 5 cameras at times

James and Jessica are one of the most sweetest couples we have ever come across. They have an understanding based on respect and love for each other and family. They come from a family-oriented background and wanted to keep their wedding small and intimate with just around 100 guests. Every detail was carefully thought out from the white dress to the red Christian Louboutin shoes to the pink bride maids dresses to the classic tuxedo worn by the groom. It all came out perfect and we hope that it was captured to showcase the wonderfulness of James and Jessica.

On an end note, our life became so much easier because our couple wanted the wedding on Red Epic cameras and they knew what went behind them. They constantly stayed in touch with us before the wedding to make sure everything runs smoothly and understood that there could be pitfalls. Lucky for everyone, there weren’t any.

You can watch this incredible film on YouTube Channel in 4k or 1080p. Please keep in mind that you must have a 4k monitor or TV and must distance yourself from it to experience the full 4k resolution.
