1. The City of Victor Harbor is 84km due south of Adelaide and situated at the head of Encounter Bay. The sea, beaches, spectacular views and wildlife make it a popular tourist attraction for visitors from overseas and interstate. The Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tramway operates from the mainland across the Causeway and around the northwest side of Granite Island. The passenger tramway began operating in 1894. The office and stables are located at the entrance to the 630 metre long Causeway. The trams operate every day of the year. Passengers may choose a return trip, or ride across one way and walk the other.

The aerial photos used in this short sequence show the seaside setting of the township and the tramway route across the causeway, and around one side of the island.

  2. The Clydesdale horses that work the Horse Drawn Tramway live on 100 acres of lush tree-fringed pastureland along one bank of the Hindmarsh River. At dawn they can be found out in the pasture calmly grazing. Few peple approach them out here in their domain, so at first they become alert, then curious and then come to investigate. Usually they make their own way up to the paddock feed shed shortly before the routine arrival of one of the staff. They know that they will each enjoy a feed of lucerne hay (alfalfa) before the horses scheduled to work that day head off to the Causeway stable.

Meet the team, including the new addition JJ, and find out each horse's birth year.

  3. The Horse Drawn Tram in Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, is a tourism icon for the region and the City of Victor Harbor, and a favourite experience of many Adelaide, interstate and overseas visitors.

The trams operate 365 days a year across the Causeway to Granite Island. The trams are exact replicas of those first used in the 1800s. The service began in December 1894 and became a popular tourist attraction. Today a team of seven magnificent Clydesdale horses alternate shifts in drawing the trams. High tech-roller bearings that require little effort to mobilise the trams are used.

A new Clydesdale colt has joined the team. Jock Junior, or JJ as he is becoming known, is an 8 month old playful and friendly cuddly toy. He joined the herd in their pasture in early September 2009 and is adjusting to the other six fully grown horses and the wide open space of their 100 acre home. It will be four years before before he takes his place as one of the working horses.

  4. The Cydesdales chosen for work each day travel 4 Km from their 10 ha (25acre) pasture to the Causeway stables. The route takes them across the open countryside, along the riverside, through the urban streets of Victor Harbor, over a busy main road, then along the seaside esplanade. In spring and summer the horses enjoy walking and splashing in the sea followed by a stroll across the sandy beach. Then the thunder of hooves during a brief spirited trot up to the stables alerts all to their arrival.

When the tides and the seaweed have made the beach inaccessible, they follow the roads and arrive making a distinctive heavy clattering.

  5. In the Southern Hemisphere, the 1st of August is the official birthday for all horses.

The City of Victor Harbor celebrates this with a party for the Clydesdales of the Horse Drawn Tramway. The party is usually in the reserve next to the work stables, but if the weather is inclement, it is held in the huge glass showcase "Tram Barn" 200 metres away.

When the 1st falls on a weekday, a small celebration is held for the press, residents, visitors, staff and the volunteers. Then on the next Saturday a bigger celebration, with activities and attractions for the children to enjoy, is also held. Everyone is welcome and it is free... so come along next year.
