NOTE: In September of 2014, Food Font began to change the focus of the project from creating a design tool to instead creating printable alphabets and partnering with other free online design tools.

    What is Food Font?
Food Font is an interactive art project where people can make alphabets out of food, take pictures of each letter, and later use these and other food alphabets in both printable forms as well as in free interactive design tools. The project supports dialogue and builds community around food, health, and sustainability. It is also fun to make food alphabets and to make images that you can save, print, and share. So why not play and write with your food?

How do the Food Font Alphabet Making activities work?
A group of individuals work together to make an alphabet out of food. Each letter is photographed and later prepared and uploaded to the Food Font website. The person submitting the alphabet will also submit a name, location information, and tags for each food alphabet. Each alphabet submitted will be loaded into the Food Font image library. A set of letters could be made out of one kind of food, or several types of food. Some Food fonts that have been made include a kale font, holiday dinner font (made of food from a Christmas dinner), a French fry font, a vending machine food font, a packed lunch food font , and a chopped vegetable font. The letter making activity is a great way for individuals and groups to have fun and to interact and talk about food.

How can the Food Font alphabets be used?
The Food Font alphabets can be used in both printed and digital forms. All alphabets will be prepared into easy to print pages as well as also being downloadable. We also are working to partner with some online interactive design tools that will work well with the Food Font images. By hand and in the digital realm, you can make creations to make images that can be saved, shared electronically, and also printed on your own printer. The tool can be used to make images, posters, signs, and other printed materials. You can also post what you make in the Food Font image gallery which will be on the Food Font website. You will be able to use any food alphabets that you made as well as any others submitted to the tool.

    Who is this project for?
It is designed for use by a variety of groups including you with your friends and family, farmer’s markets, teachers and students in the classroom, community gardens, chefs and restaurants, and people who have a passion for food. It is a fun, creative activity that anyone can do of any age, and in any size group.

In April the Food Font activity was done at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Students, faculty and staff worked on making 2 CIA (Cleveland Institute of Art) food alphabets. During the lunch hour, people made letters out of some of their lunch food. Each letter was photographed and will be part of the 2 CIA font sets that will be used in the Food Font interactive design tool.

    We created 2 food alphabets:
The CIA Vending machine food alphabet (made of food from the vending machines)
The CIA Packed Lunch alphabet (made of food from food from packed lunches)

    Thanks to everyone that participated!

Food Font is a project comprised of food and design workshops, font making activities and the use both printable and downloadable food alphabets accessible at foodfont.com. The project supports education, interaction, and communication about food, health, and design.

Why not play and write with your food?

Food Font is a community art project comprised of design workshops, font making activities and the use of the interactive online design tool Food Font. The project supports education, interaction, and communication about food, health, and design. With the Food Font project, people make alphabets out of food and later are able to use these and other food alphabets in a fun, free, interactive online design tool.

For the project, people make an alphabet (also called letterforms) out of any kind of food.

At the Food Font event, each letter created is photographed. These are later edited and loaded into the online Food Font interactive design tool. With this tool, individuals can load up the food alphabet that they helped create as well as use the other food alphabets in the system. You can type in words, choose backgrounds, resize and rotate elements, and do basic layout techniques to make images that can be saved, shared electronically, and also printed. The tool can be used to make images, posters, signs, greeting cards, and other printed materials.

The project is meant for anyone to do, which includes community members at Farmer’s market or at a community garden, teachers and students in a classroom or by a restaurant, by “foodies” and people who love food , or by you with your friends and family. It is a fun, creative activity that anyone can do of any age, and in any size group.

Kristen Baumlier is currently doing Food Font events during Summer and Fall of 2012 to get the Food Font project into the community and to inspire others to make their own food alphabets.
