Lutes and Early Guitars

  1. The sarabande movement from the violin partita BWV 1002. I played this on classical guitar in my youth and felt motivated to make a baroque lute transcription. Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a Rutherford 13 course lute.

  2. A Sarabande in D Major from the Grussau manuscript (PL-WU RM 4136 2003). Actually, this movement is in B minor but the sonata is in D major (for you purists). Listed as possibly by Sylvius Leopold Weiss and assigned the provisional sonata number SW90. Not convinced that this is Weiss, but lovely just the same. MANY errors in the MS of note position and notes to the bar requiring mulitple corrections (some of course are just best guesses). Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a 13 course Rutherford baroque lute. First movement is here:

  3. This anonymous air in the Gottweig 2 Ms is a setting for baroque lute of the melody Fuggi fuggi fuggi da questo cielo by Giuseppe Cenci. Also called La Mantovana it has been popular for centuries and used in Smetna's Ma Vlast and Israel's national anthem, Hatikva. Thanks to Wilfred Foxe for the great find in the latest issue (118) of Lute News. Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a gut strung 11 course lute by Grant Tomlinson

  4. The opening Allemanda movement from Reusner's Suite in C minor. Found in Neue Lautenfrüchte (1676). Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a gut strung 11 course lute by Grant Tomlinson

  5. An interesting courante for 10 course lute from the Swiss manuscript CH-Basel F IX 53. This Ms has music for both renaissance and baroque tuned instruments. I think the composer is Jean Boyer but have no info on him. Many concordances including in other keys, in d minor tuning and settings for mandora so people probably did find this "extremely beautiful". Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a gut strung 10 course lute by Travis Carey

I started to learn the baroque lute % months ago. Can any of you guys advise me on where I can get/buy the tablature for the 13 c lute?
