Last year (2007) HOW BERKELEY CAN YOU BE?! PARADE really marked the beginning of our taking our presidential campaign into the public. The year since then has been filled with campaign speeches, festivals, performances, interviews and other events. Last year I shook hundreds of hands and gave out over a thousand copies of my platform during the parade and at the festival afterwards. But last year there was a laid-back feeling. This year there were hours of extremely intense intimate inter-reactions/exchanges of hope and vision. It was non-stop…much more than at the other festivals. Many people knew about the campaign. A lot of people…all kinds of people….knew me/us from our public access cable shows [we are on tv in Berkeley and the surrounding towns every night for around 6 hours!]. It was extremely inspiring, if exhausting!

  2. Ah, yes! I did spend two years running for president as a write-in candidate! It is one of my most effective performances! It inspired a lot of people, forced changes in laws in several states, attracted a lot of mainstream European press coverage, and gave me a platform on which to address issues. SEE, I AM NOT JUST A HUNK!

I swear, I’ll die from having a rich life! Last night quite a few people showed up for my campaign speech...especially considering it was a rainy holiday night. A guy came with a campaign song he had written for me…I had him sing it. Then Tom Sanders read his introduction of me.

    Here’s what DA BOYZ wrote:

"It was lots of fun setting up for the gig, putting up all the banners, etc., seeing Tom Sanders arrive, Carl Lasagna! ... and then before you knew it, it was beginning!

It was very cozy in that little alcove, and Tom's intro to Frank was fiery, poetic and right on!  And then Frank's "speech", which, translated into our reality, was more of a journey into an alternative model of reality, through Frank/this life into new governing models, new social models, new approaches to public service, and then back again into Frank and us ...  What other candidate does, or even could, use his own family/community as an example in this way?  It was really deep, and we were saying later that it took a certain special kind of person to be able to grill a candidate presenting such a vision.  We felt that most people, including ourselves, were too much overtaken by the feeling/vision of these possibilities to even begin to think critically about them, or maybe also, wouldn't want to!  Carl Bryant or Gerald were people who could do it!  It was amazing that the young guy and gal had been following Frank's campaign that he had even bought the t-shirt, and came to the event from a flier!  And we loved what Stefan said about Frank's piece, after spending two hours watching the "leading" democratic candidates say nothing, and take a lot longer to say it.  It was neat to find out later that there were several other folks sitting in the main eating area who had come specifically for Frank's campaign stop ..."

And tomorrow the Swedish TV crew is coming back for more shooting. And now a British disability magazine has asked me to write a piece [for pay!] about my running for president. Amazing!

Frank Moore

"Well, are not all political campaigns performances? That doesn’t mean they are not serious. My performances often start with something seemingly trivial then grow by themselves very quickly into forces unto themselves. The campaign started with a t-shirt of The Three Stooges. Michael [“Mikee”] LaBash, who is one of six people I live with in a tribal relationship and who is our graphic/web designer, had a CURLY FOR PRESIDENT t-shirt. For Christmas 2006 Mikee made me a FRANK MOORE FOR PRESIDENT shirt. When I wore it, people started asking me what my platform was. So I wrote a platform up. Everybody who read it got excited, overflowed with hope, saying it expressed what they felt and wanted. They didn’t see a performance artist in a wheelchair. They didn’t check the odds of my winning. Instead they saw someone who they could excitedly vote for… somebody who shared their dreams, who talked deeply about what really affects their lives. Their reactions placed on me a responsibility to mount a serious campaign, to commit and surrender to it…and to hang on no matter where this ride would go. I never know where a performance or a project will evolve...

This excitement extended overseas, and we received much more coverage of the campaign in Europe than we did locally, although there were a handful of great interviews and articles about the campaign here in the U.S.. In Europe, there were great articles written about the campaign in France, Germany, Poland and the UK, and an appearance on Swedish TV!

We did many local events and attended many different local festivals during the over two years that I ran for President, and they were some of the most effective pieces I have ever done …" -- Frank Moore

Frank was a registered write-in candidate in 25 states, receiving votes all over the country, even in states like Georgia and West Virginia. His campaign changed some of the unfair rules for write-in candidates in various states along the way, and even educated people who worked in the election departments themselves about the process. Frank's campaign inspired countless people with a sense of new possibilities, a vision of what can be, and what "just makes sense"!
