    News headlines are read over staged and real images of violence. A scalpel cuts a flesh-like substance in what at first appears to be a grotesque surgery, but eventually emerges as the creation of a bizarre dessert resembling an American flag. News headlines and political speeches overlay this and other images. The consequences of war and violence are considered in a troubling collage.

    Biography: El-Soudani studied at the California Institute of the Arts for an MFA in Film and Video. Her video Hal Tara was chosen for a screening at the CalArts Showcase 2004 at Raleigh Studios, Chaplin Theater. She was awarded the Women in Film Scholarship in 2004. In her work, El-Soudani brings to the forefront provoking ideas that are relevant to the current political issues in the Middle East and the United States.

    Biography: Working with and nurturing eccentric public spaces, Laurel Beckman highlights perception and public display. Attending to themes at the crossroads of consciousness + social conditions, meta-physics + science, Beckman's practice investigates perceptual phenomena, language, the built environment, and animal-human relations. Employing a wide range of media and distribution strategies, her sanctioned and unsanctioned projects often enlist commercial and civic spaces in her efforts to contribute meaningfully to the cultural landscape and to our understanding of empathy. She is an associate professor of art at the University of California Santa Barbara.
