Fronteers Conference 2016

  1. Barbara recently published her first book ”Lean Websites”. Her talk focuses on one of the most important chapters of the book called ”Performance Cheat Sheet”, a set of about dozen exercises to guide you in practicing web performance. Barbara believes that the more frequently you apply these tips, the better you’ll get at mastering performance issues and creating fast, and lean websites.

Join Barbara’s talk to learn more about these tips, as well as the performance point system, and how to split your website into measurable performance modules.

  2. In an age of responsive websites, learning how to build components that can be reused in multiple areas without adding much complexity to your code is crucial.

Have you wondered how it is possible to accomplish this feat in pure CSS without making your CSS into a bloated mess of hacky code? What naming conventions should you use? How do you structure and code your CSS? How do you deal components that have to be placed in wildly different areas?

In his talk, Zell aims to share with you his experiences and approach on building responsive, reusable components. He goes deep into the granular level (and even discusses what units he recommends you to use).

  3. The sane version of my talk title would be 'Modern Web Security Standards' but I wanted to make light of the fact that sometimes there can be too many to keep up with.

In this talk I'm going to introduce you to some awesome features that allow us to quickly and easily boost security and offer better protection to our visitors. From mitigating Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) to enforcing the use of HTTPS or protecting ourselves against rogue Certificate Authorities and Content Delivery Networks, these are just some of the things that are possible.

If you were to implement even one of the standards I'm going to talk about today, you'd probably be doing better than your bank!

  4. Animation is captivating. Our brains are trained to respond most intently to movement. For this reason, animation in a user experience is extremely important, and also very easy to overdo. Carefully considered animation can compose spatial maps to guide users. Animations can be responsive, resolution-independent, and make a site function intuitively.

In this session Sarah will cover a myriad of use cases, from both design and technical implementation standpoints.

  5. Bruce Lawson leverages synergies for Opera and co-wrote the first book on HTML5, Introducing HTML5. He was previously content editor and technical lead for The Law Society and the Solicitors Regulation Authority websites. He was a member of the Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group at the W3C. He's been a 6502 and Z80 assembler programmer, a tarot card reader and tutor to a Princess.
