  1. Triangulite (2021)

    Interactive Light Sculpture by FUTURETRO.co.uk

    44cm x 20cm x 20cm

Redwood, oak, clear acrylic, frosted acrylic, Bluetooth app control system, colour changing LED light source.

Triangulite is a tabletop, interactive sculpture, comprising fifteen redwood (pine) triangles. The triangles are stacked on top of each other, with a central acrylic tube running through the middle, linking them together. The central tube comprises an inner tube, with five meters of RGB LED strip lights fitted to it, looping vertically around the inside and outside of the tube. Then a frosted acrylic tube fits over the top of the inner tube, in order to diffuse the light source and create a glowing ambience. The triangles are separated slightly by clear acrylic spacer tubes. These create small gaps between each triangle, allowing light to project from the centre, casting coloured illumination over the woodgrain of the sculpture and its surroundings. The triangles are able to rotate independently, allowing various geometric patterns to be created through pleasing tactile interaction. The sculpture has a triangular oak base, which houses the Bluetooth control system for the lighting. This enables interaction with the sculpture via an app and allows the selection of colours, programming of sequences and an almost infinite variety of lighting effects. The piece also has an integrated microphone, enabling the sound that is sensed to be transformed into a synchronised audio-visual display.

Shown in sequence mode. Music by Alice Coltrane.

  2. Loving in the Face of Fear - detail (2021)

Interactive Light Sculpture / Illuminating Table by FUTURETRO.co.uk

    47cm x 64cm x 42cm

Oak, Ash, Mahogany, Elm, Walnut, Rose Quartz, Garden Quartz, Aura Rose Quartz, Bronze, Toughened Glass, Smart control system, colour changing LED light source.

Loving in the Face of Fear is a hybrid piece of functional art… It is a sculptural coffee table and an interactive light sculpture, rolled into one. Crafted from five different varieties of hardwood and three different varieties of crystal, the piece has a toughened glass top and also includes a special, cast bronze detail.

The central, geometric element is made up of hundreds of tiny, hand-sculpted pieces of oak. These miniature oak structures create an abstract diorama, depicting the suggestion of a sci-fi-esque cityscape.

During the creation of this piece, whilst daydreaming of the many iconic, cityscape escapades depicted throughout recent history, I had the vision of including a (happy / jovial / triumphant) King Kong-type character. My intention being to represent the transformation of a symbol that has long been perceived as a fear inducing presence, to that of one that stands for the projection of positivity… One that wholeheartedly encourages... ‘Loving in the Face of Fear’!

...So, in collaboration with my friend, Paul Winslow, the ‘Micro Kong’ (standing only 2cm tall) was hand-sculpted in wax and then cast in solid bronze. This Micro Kong can be seen, with a big grin on its face, rejoicing atop one of the oak ‘skyscrapers’.

The piece has an internal Smart control system, connected to state-of-the-art LEDs that are concealed within the outer frame of the table. This enables interaction with the piece via any Smart enabled device, allowing the selection of colours, programming of sequences and an almost infinite variety of lighting effects. The table can be integrated into any Smart home system and can also access the microphone in any smartphone or handheld device, transforming the sound that is sensed into a synchronised audio-visual display.

Shown in sound response mode, with music by Tony Allen + Hugh Masekela.

Interactive sculptures inspired by the intricate beauty of nature and my infinite inner visions. Handmade with love…
I enjoy the extra dimensional aspect of integrating electronics and lighting in my work. This enables my sculptures to become interactive with the observer; capable of changing their shapes and colours, using an array of technologies. Some of my work is also sound responsive, creating interactive, audio-visual installations.
