This is '3-DELEQ', a sound responsive light sculpture that I made...
125cm x 52cm
Toughened glass, clear acrylic, electroluminescent pigment, polycarbonate colour filters, anodised aluminium tube, stainless steel rod, stainless steel, sound to light driver, sequence driver.
3-DELEQ stands for 3-Dimensional, ElectroLuminescent, EQualiser. It is a sound responsive light sculpture that uses electroluminescent technology. 3-DELEQ has been created so that any music or sound can be input; the sound is then split into 3 separate frequency ranges and individually represented by the 3 different coloured sets of rings. Bass frequencies are represented by the red rings, mid-range frequencies are represented by the yellow rings and treble frequencies are represented by the green rings. The higher the level of each of the individual frequency ranges that are sensed, the more rings that represent that frequency range are illuminated, starting from low levels at the bottom, to high levels at the top. 3-DELEQ creates an animated visual representation of the sounds that you are hearing, similar to a graphic equaliser display but in a three-dimensional cylindrical form.
"I wanted to create an audio-visual experience that takes the enjoyment of music to a higher level, where you can see the sound as well as hear it.” (Jamie Barrett - Futuretro).
There is also a sequence driver in 3-DELEQ, so that pre-set patterns can be programmed. This allows a visual display to be created that can be enjoyed without the need of any sound being input.

This is an animated time-lapse video of my living room, showing some of my Futuretro interactive light sculptures.
I took hundreds of photographs and edited them together in order to create this glitchy, dreamlike depiction of my living room.

This is 'DNA', a sound responsive light sculpture that I made...
240cm x 90cm
Frosted acrylic, clear acrylic rod, clear acrylic tube, clear acrylic, stainless steel rod, aluminium tube, mirror glass, oak, programmable control panel, sound to light driver, sequence driver, colour changing LED light source.
DNA is a sound responsive light sculpture that is based on the double helix formation of a DNA molecule. The main section of the sculpture consists of 177 individually handcrafted frosted acrylic pieces. Housed in the hexagonal oak base is a powerful LED projector. The light that is projected upwards from the base of the sculpture is diffused across the surface of the acrylic pieces. There are large circular mirrors at the top and bottom of the DNA column that create an infinite reflection of the illuminated double helix formation. The light source can be controlled from the LCD, back-lit DMX control panel that is located on the front of the base. The control panel enables the programming and selection of: colour scenes, colour sequences, sequence speed, master brightness, timed events and the sound response function. The control panel also has an Ethernet connection and built-in web server to enable computer programming of the light sculpture, allowing the selection and mixing of 16 million colours.

This is a time-lapse video of the creation of my new light sculpture, 'Naturesynth 3'...
60cm x 35cm
Fluorescent acrylic, stainless steel rod, aluminium tube, Red Mallee tree burr.
Naturesynths are Carbon Balanced interactive light sculptures that are created from waste materials. They are made by heat-sculpting discarded offcuts of acrylic, which are then combined with wood and metal to create unique representations of nature’s energy. By recycling scrapped materials to create Naturesynths I reduce waste and energy consumption. Naturesynths are inspired by the natural world, dreams and inner visions. My hope is that the sculptures can spread positive energy through an environmentally friendly and sustainable creative process and help to raise awareness of the necessity for humans to live in harmony with nature.
For every Naturesynth that is sold a donation is made to an environmental charity to help conserve threatened ecosystems.
My sculptures are Carbon Balanced; I offset any unavoidable carbon emissions that are associated with their creation.
(Music: 'Take Time' by The Books).

This is a 3 minute, glitchy, animated depiction of my old living room. I created it from a series of photos that I took shortly before packing up all of my sculptures and moving to the Caribbean at the beginning of 2012. The music is by Aphex Twin and if you manage to watch the video to the end you might experience an audio-visual overload.
