As part of the inaugural Fremantle Beer Fest in 2013, we got together with Pete and the team at the iconic Sail & Anchor Pub in downtown Freo to host the first in an annual series of amateur brewing competitions.

The challenge?: Brew a kick-ass American IPA.
We had a stack of great entries, but it was Jeremy Sambrooks’ Rapid Fire IPA that beat all comers to be crowned champ. Described by the man himself as "a liquid tribute to my favourite US hops", Rapid Fire is your quintessential US-style IPA: big piny, resin, and citrus nose, sweet malt, arresting bitterness, and at 6.3% it's got a healthy dose of booze.

If you’re thinking that home brewing is all about cheapskates, impoverished uni students, old men with cracked heels, or introverts with neckbeards then a quick swig of one of Jeremy’s beers might be the perfect tonic for your naivety.

Jeremey’s prize for winning this illustrious competition was the opportunity to join the team at Gage Roads and reproduce the winning beer on a commercial scale. Check the above clip to see Jeremy and Senior Brewer Brad Nolan discussing the process.

Rapid Fire IPA is the first in our newly minted “Backyard to Bottleshop” series, released in a super limited number of bottles and kegs for the WA market.

with one eye shut.

We've been crafting beer just outside Fremantle in Western Australia for almost a decade. Our name comes from the strip of ocean that separates the port town of Freo and Rottnest Island. Pretty simple really.
