The African Biodiversity Network and The Gaia Foundation

  1. A short film from by The African Biodiversity Network (ABN), and The Gaia Foundation (UK). Narrated by Ghanaian born, British actor Hugh Quarshie.

    This film documents a unique process being carried out annually in Botswana, Africa.

    Over one week, a group of creative African community workers and change makers are brought together to discuss and experience some of the rich traditional heritage of their continent and to discuss what part this should play in each of their countries futures.

    Thanks to all those who took part in the Botswana process in November 2009.

    With special thanks to Colin and Niall Campbell of Ngwenyama Traditional Healers Training School in Botswana, and to Tetu Maingi (Kenya) and Bern Guri (Ghana) for featuring in this film.

  2. The Sheka Forest Story shows the power of collaboration.

    The Sheka forest is one of Ethiopia's largest and last remaining tropical forests. Clan leaders, the local community and the local government have come together with the support of local partner, Melca Ethiopia, to help secure the future of the forest, its rich bio-cultural diversity and to enhance sustainable livelihood options.

    The Sheka Forest Story tells an enchanting tale of the complexities of forest governance at a time when it has never been more critical.

    It takes everyone to protect a forest. It only takes a few to destroy it.

The Kamburu Story - tells how Kago and Rosemary, and the Kamburu community in central Kenya, took back control of their farming system by reviving their knowledge and seed diversity, and in 18 months had a food surplus.

The Sheka Forest Story - Wisdom from the Past, Resilience for the Future has been produced by ABN and Gaia's partner Melca Ethiopia. The film follows the story of the indigenous clans and local community working with the local government to protect and preserve their beautiful biodiverse Sheka Rainforest. The film shows the power of collaboration and reminds us that it takes everyone to protect a forest, but only a few to destroy it.

Reviving our Culture, Mapping our Future tells the story of a special gathering of indigenous leaders from Venda (South Africa), Altai (Russia) and the Colombian Amazon, and a training in eco-cultural mapping of Venda territory.
