Gate to Great

Before we get to actually roping anything, we first make sure they know what to do if they were to get tangled in the rope somehow. Accidents happen and if a horse gets the rope wrapped around its legs, the last thing we want is for them to panic. And that is where hobble training comes in.

Hobbles have been used for millenia as a way to allow horses to graze while traveling. Hobbles can be used where fences do not exist and where lack of trees also take out the option to use a picket line. People who ride in open country still use hobbles today as one of the best way to contain a horse when there is no place to tie. We use hobbles and hobble training to teach a horse how to react when their feet are held...mainly don't panic!

Having a horse that doesn't panic when their feet are held in ropes can save a lot of lives and limbs. A horse's natural, first instinct when his feet are caught in something is to kick until they are free. If what he is caught in is strong rope or worse, loose wire, this reaction could be fatal. On the flipside, if we can train them to react calmly, give to the pressure of the rope and wait for a person to remedy the situation, we have a horse that can get through a lot of dangerous situations without calamity.

We start hobble training by simply having them relax while Dale takes a big cotton lead rope and drapes it around their legs. Lots of pats and calm works help the fidgety one and most don't really mind. Then he asks them to move their feet forward or backward when pressure is lightly applied on the rope. We want to get them to a point where the rope pulling on their legs doesn't cause them to kick, but to instead move with it, like Shiny is doing in the video below.

Taking Racehorses from the Starting Gate to GREAT!
Through the Gate to Great Geldings program, we provide a rehabilitation process that gives Thoroughbred geldings a chance to recover from the rigors of a racing career and time to develop new skills outside the backside environment. Relying on our experience using Thoroughbreds for ranch work, we expose former racehorses to tasks necessary for success in new vocations, be it on the range or in the arena. We are proud to see our horses go from the starting gate to GREAT mounts for any discipline!
