Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF)

On 16 November 2017, the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) hosted a webinar covering the following topics: We took the opportunity to remind market participants again to obtain a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) in readiness of the European Union revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directive and Regulation (MiFID II / MiFIR) applicable from 3 January 2018 onwards. We also offered insight on how we continuously increase the information available within the LEI data pool, achieve data quality and make it ever easier for data users to access information. In addition, we summarized the main findings of research into LEIs carried out by McKinsey & Company and GLEIF, which examines potential use cases of the LEI in the process of streamlining legal entity identification. The resulting white paper identifies that the financial services industry can benefit from savings, efficiencies and greater reliability in entity verification, worth a combined annual value of $650m. The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) channel provides information on the rollout of the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI).

In 2011 the Group of Twenty called on the Financial Stability Board (FSB) to provide recommendations for a global LEI and a supporting governance structure. This led to the development of the Global LEI System which, through the issuance of LEIs, now provides unique identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions across the globe. The FSB emphasized that global adoption of the LEI underpins multiple “financial stability objectives” and also offers “many benefits to the private sector”.

The LEI is a 20-digit, alpha-numeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization. The LEI connects to key reference information that enables clear and unique identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions.

Established by the FSB in June 2014, GLEIF is a not-for-profit organization created to support the implementation and use of the LEI. GLEIF is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. GLEIF services ensure the operational integrity of the Global LEI System. GLEIF also makes available the technical infrastructure to provide, via an open data license, access to the full global LEI repository free of cost to users.
