  1. A video installation filmed on the "Eco Turismo" plantation on the outskirts of Siquirres, Costa Rica for Jan Nimmo's Green Gold Project.
    The film follows the process of getting bananas from the plantation where the are grown to the packing plant where they are processed and packed for export.
    This was made possible thanks to the owner, Fernando. "Eco Turismo" is one of the few trade union friendly plantations.

When Scottish artist, Jan Nimmo, travels to Ecuador, the world's largest exporter of bananas, to gather workers' testimonies, she observes the formation of the first trade unions in the banana sector for 30 years. The Los Alamos banana workers decide to go on strike for the most basic of rights. But the company which owns the plantation, Bonita Brands, is owned by Alvaro Noboa, Ecuador's richest man and serial presidential candidate. Alvaro Noboa doesn't like unions. Bonita is the world's fourth largest banana company yet the workers earn a pittance, are exposed to a cocktail of toxic agro-chemicals and their living conditions are appalling. Bonita is a powerful eyewitness account of what happens to workers who dare to stand up against a powerful oligarch.....

This channel features films made by artist and filmmaker, Jan Nimmo, for Green Gold. Jan has been gathering testimonies and making portraits of banana and pineapple workers since 2000. Green Gold is a collaborative art project where workers' stories are highlighted through a variety of media including documentary film, portraits, testimonies, installation and photography. The project aims to build a bridge between workers and consumers and give a human face to the the workers' who produce Britain's favourite fruit. The latest addition is a series of 6 portraits /short testimonies of Cameroonian banana workers - there is also a full festival version (18 mins), Portraits from Cameroon.
